The Essential Guide to Teaching English and Living in Thailand by Sarah Abbott and Michael Plews
Many book claims to be an “essential guide” and then disappoint. This one is different- it does what is says on the cover. Aimed at new arrivals rather than the experienced, it covers so many practical details that will make your life easier.
The book begins with a description of the qualifications you’ll need before moving on to the types of institutes that are available to a teacher in Thailand including an informative section on freelance or private teaching; the best time of year to look for jobs and an analysis of typical salaries. I was particularly impressed by the chapter on what to check in the interview, what to take with you (larger-sized bras are apparently hard to get hold of!) and some insight into cultural faux pas to avoid.
This book can be downloaded electronically, currently at only £2.58. A sound investment.
